My Summer Wrap Up

Hello there! I can’t believe it’s already the end of August. Where is 2016 going? I feel like the past three months just rushed by. I haven’t been all too active (safe to say not at all, actually) and in this post I’d like to tell you guys why and what I’ve been up to.

So in July I had my 20th birthday (whoop, it’ll all go downhill from here, I already have tons of back aches) and the day after that I flew off to Manchester to start my month of interrailing through the UK and Ireland. I had an absolute blast and I still haven’t sorted through the photos and souvenirs although I’ve been back home for about three weeks now. I’m just a very lazy unpacker.

However, all the new books and comics I bought already have their very own new comfy spaces in my bookshelves, so there’s a bright side to this. Tomorrow I’ll be telling you all about my Harry Potter vacation and maybe even more about interrailing itself, but for today let’s stick to the usual wrap up, alright? (I'll be wrapping up July and August together)

I can't believe that I've already finished my Goodreads Reading Challenge! I thought it would be so hard for me to read even 30 books in the whole of 2016 because of me starting Uni, but I managed to do that even before Uni started! Who knows, maybe I'll reach 50 books like last year. I'm just so glad that I don't feel any pressure anymore about finishing that one.

Top Ten Tuesday #4: Ten Books I Read In Class

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.   

This week is Back To School Freebie week and although I'm not returning to school right away (I'll be starting Uni mid September) I wanted to reflect on some great books I read in Class. Now to be honest, although I adore reading I hated reading assignments. I did not at all enjoy reading books as homework because they never were the ones I would have picked in a bookstore for myself. There are a lot of books that I didn't actually read for school and just kept along in class thanks to Sparknotes and my friends. But there were a few books I quite enjoyed so let's have a look at those.

# 10 Holes by Louis Sachar

 

I think I read this in 10th Grade. We could decide between Matilda by Roald Dahl, another book I forgot and Holes. The blurb of this one was the most convincing for me so I decided to join the group who read this book and I quite enjoyed it. Also: we got to watch the movie afterwards and I just love seeing young Shia LaBeouf!

# 9 Au revoir, les enfants by Louis Malle

I also read this book in 10th Grade in French class. It's a movie script about a boarding school that hid jew children in 1944. Very emotional! I read lots and lots of books about that time (which almost always left me crying because of the horrible happenings) and this is definitely my favourite one I read in French. 

# 8 Woyzeck by Georg Büchner

I think the reason this was one of my favourite German books to read was that it only has 20 pages. The author died before finishing it so the ending of the book leaves a lot open to interpret.

# 7 Die Physiker by Friedrich Dürrenmatt

Another German Classic and one of my favourites. I read this book about three times and I made a class presentation about it and I even chose it as my Finals book. So there's the proove that I really enjoyed reading it. I think the fact that it plays in a mental hospital and the ending leaves you so confused as to who actually is 'crazy' now made me like it even more. A lot of plot twists and a definitely fun read!

# 6 La petite fille de monsieur Linh by Philippe Claudel

 

I liked this book so much because I basically read it in one sitting the first time through. It's a very cute story and easy to read although the significance of the content is a little darker than it seems at first. 

# 5 Como agua para chocolate by Laura Esquivel

 

Looking back at my review I'm not at all surprised I only gave this one two stars the first time I read it. I've always had a complicated relationship with Spanish books during school. Mostly because they were just weird. Spanish authors had this habit of making up the weirdest of all stories and I just didn't like them. But now I actually quite like this story and I've also seen the movie multiple times (which is even weirder than the book... but oh well). 

# 4 Nichts by Janne Teller

 

Nichts, which means Nothing, was a book I got to read by my own decision in 12th Grade for my German Finals. A friend recommended it to me and I really enjoyed this one. It's actually a pretty new novel released only in 2012.

# 3 Contes by Charles Perrault

 

I've always been fascinated by fairytales and sagas which made reading this book really fun. Charles Perrault was the first person to write down fairytales known today all around the world. Some of these were quite brutal and very different to the versions we know and hear about nowadays. If you ever want to find out what actually happened to Sleeping Beauty or Tom Thumb or other well known characters I recommend you check out these short stories.

# 2 Bodas de sangre by Federico García Lorca

 

My absolute favourite Spanish book ever! I've lost track of how many times I've read this one and I'll probably read it so many more times I don't even want to start counting again. It's short, not so simple and very dramatic. Also: It's not a weird Spanish story so I really enjoyed it for actually being empathizable. 

# 1 To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

What else could it be? My Number One book is of course my all time favourite classic! I read this before reading it in class and it was quite hard to keep myself from spoiling my friends the whole time. Once I blurtet out the ending of a certain character in the middle of class, but not too understood what I was actually saying, thank god. I still haven't read Go Set a Watchman, but I've got the book at home so I'll do read it someday (soon, hopefully!).

I'm Back & Pokemon Indigo League

Hey there! I'm alive! If you've noticed my absence in the blogging community the past three months then I’d like to apologize from the bottom of my heart. I was on a blogging hiatus because I didn’t feel happy about blogging anymore. June/July were two very stressful months for me with work, dance training and organising my life and everything which didn’t leave me with any spare time to write new blog posts. And then I went interrailing for a whole month, which I’ll gladly tell you all about, but more about this in the next few days.

Today I’d like to sign up for a Read-A-Thon created by Aentee @ Read at Midnight. I’m a little late to the party, but I still hope to get the most out of this because it looks like a lot of fun and I’m a huge Pokemon fan so I just couldn’t resist! (If you click on the picture it will lead you to the official sign up post)

So the Read-A-Thon officially runs between Sunday 14th August to Sunday 4th September, which leaves me just a little more than one week to participate so my expectations aren’t that high. Let’s check out my trainer card.

Top Ten Tuesday #3: Ten Reasons I Love Comic Cons

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.   

This week we're allowed to talk about anything that we love. Some of you might know that I went to Fantasy Basel 2016, which is Switzerland's own Comic Con. I've wanted to share my experience with this for you guys since then, but never found the time to. That's why I decided to tell you about it today! (Just so you know, this was my first ever time at a Comic Con, so I was a total noob). I realise this is not reall book related, but as I'm going to expand my blog to include comics as well, I think this is a fitting beginning. Hope you'll enjoy!

1. The Atmosphere: It is incredible how many people showed up in amazing cosplay and costumes of all kinds of franchises. I must admit, I did not expect something like that and I’m really glad that I got to meet a lot of amazing people. Everyone was excited and totally friendly. It doesn’t matter where you looked, there were always wizards, orks, superheroes or villains and sometimes even a pokemon or two in your view.

2. Cosplay: The only thing you could do to stand out of the crowd was to not participate in cosplaying. It’s incredible how much time, money and creativity people spent into their costumes and I’m already planning my costumes for next year because I want to leave a better impression and maybe even participate in a competition or two. Oh and if you haven't figured it out yet, I went as Scarlet Witch, but my costume was a last minute idea, which is why it's not near perfect. But people actually recognised me as Wanda, so I was quite happy with the outcome.

 

3. Storm Troopers: That said, some costumes were repeatedly represented. You don’t know how many Storm Troopers I ran into. (Well I don’t know myself to be honest.) Naturally, I asked everyone to take a selfie with me, but now that I think of it I believe that it’s highly possible I just asked the same few guys a hundred times for a photograph. Honestly, you couldn’t tell them apart. My suspicion got clearer when one of the storm troopers eventually started winking at me when I approached him.

4. Selfies: I can’t even count all the selfies I did that day. Usually I’m not the biggest selfie fan (mainly because I’m no good at them and I always cut myself out of the picture), but on that day I took what felt like a gazillion of ‘em. I wanted to memorize all the cool cosplayers and attractions and my memory card was full at the end of the day.

5. Meeting Kevin Sussman: Why is it, that everytime I meet a famous person or just someone I like I get really nervous and behave like a total buffoon? So this is how I met Kevin: I stood in line for my photo to be taken with him (which was way too expensive, but I just had to meet him) and as the line grew smaller in front of me, I still felt normal and calm as the rest of the day. But then it was my turn. I walked up to the woman who held my bag for me and went to say hi to Kevin (I don’t remember if we hugged or shook hands). It felt like I had a toad in my throat because I couldn’t talk clearly. The conversation went like this: Kev: “Hi, nice to meet you!” Me: “Hey, yeah nice to meet you!” – We take the picture and my whole body is really tense and I try not to move – Kev: “Thank you for coming!” Me: “Thank you, really great to meet you. Bye” – I walk and get my bag. I walk past Kevin and he exclaims: “Oh cool bag!” – I had a bag with me with an atom on it so he probably thought it was because of the show (which actually it wasn’t, but I didn’t tell him that of course, well okay, I couldn’t have told him that even if I’d wanted to) – I say: “Thank you. Goodbye” and I just walk away and wait for my picture to be printed. I mean honestly! Why couldn’t I have talked more with him? I could have said so many things and asked him questions and stuff like that, but no I had to stutter the whole time and totally seem uninterested. I can’t believe it. But yeah, I met Kevin Sussman so yay!

6. Photobooths: Another great picture possibility was all the photobooths standing around. They took instant pictures of you and printed them out right away. We had so much fun with these and they were free!

7. My first time on a Hoverboard: I’ve wanted to ride one of these ever since they got on the market, but never had the possibility to do so. However, at Fantasy Basel I got to drive around on one of these for an hour. I didn’t know that I had such a natural talent for these things, but the salesman was totally surprised and didn’t believe me when I insisted still after five questions that I hadn’t driven one before.

8. Comics: Thanks to Fantasy I’m totally into comics again. I used to love them as a child, but in the past few years I never really had the chance to read a lot of them. Now, I’m totally obsessed with DC and Marvel again and it takes a lot of restraint to not just buy all the TPBs of my favourite superheroes.

9. Spending time with my friends: This was such a great way to spend quality time with my friends and freak out over the same fandoms at the same time. We all had a great day and I can’t wait until next year where we’ll repeat it again.

10. All the merch!: Yeah, I don’t think I have to explain this any further, but I got home with so many awesome new things! Have a look! The only thing I regret not to have bought was a big fluffy blue lama which I fell in love with and now can’t stop thinking about -.-

May Wrap Up

Hello there! How time flies, huh? It’s already the last day of May which means half of the year is nearly over. I can’t believe I’ve already been blogging for five months. Well, scratch that. The past month I haven’t really been ‘blogging’. There were so many things going on in my life that I hardly found time to read, nor review the books I actually did finish. I also went to my very first comic con and it was absolutely amazing. I’m hooked! Can’t wait for next year where I’ll definitely go again. I’m still planning on writing about that experience, although it’s already 3 weeks in the past.

There are also a lot of books that I haven’t reviewed yet, but I hope that those will be up in the next month. Oh and I achieved my first reading goal for 2016! I read 10 (well now 11) fantasy books for the Flights of Fantasy challenge! So yeah, there are a lot of posts planned for June and I hope I’ll actually be able to write them all. Also, I’m thinking about asking you guys (and other newbies) to help me prepare some posts for July/August because I’m going on my big UK tour and would love to keep my blog going. I’m thinking about something like guest posts. Have you ever let someone guest post on your blog or did you yourself write anything for other blogs? Do you have any tips for me regarding this? Would be highly appreciated!

NEWS AROUND THE BLOG

‣ I finally did it! I designed my very own first Blog Header. It doesn't really look professional, but for the moment I quite like it and it will stay up there at the top of my blog until I find time (and the talent) to design a better header (which probably won't happen in the next few months). It's actually quite embarrasing how long it took me to edit that, which is why I will keep it a secret.

‣ I also made some changes to my side bar and finally designed my own 'Follow Me' Buttons for my social media, which I'm quite proud of because I had no idea how to do it and had to google it for a long time until I found some helpful tutorials.

‣ And the third change I did was to add the 'You Might Also Like...' widget to my blog posts on the Home page. I hope it isn't too annoying and that it will give new readers other posts to check out.

IMDB Summary

With many people fearing the actions of super heroes, the government decides to push for the Hero Registration Act, a law that limits a hero's actions. This results in a division in The Avengers. Iron Man stands with this Act, claiming that their actions must be kept in check otherwise cities will continue to be destroyed, but Captain America feels that saving the world is daring enough and that they cannot rely on the government to protect the world. Lovely Letters ♡ My First Pen Pal Experience

Hey there guys! I'm so excited about today's topic for this blog post. So in March I signed up for a really awesome pen pal program. It’s called Lovely Letters and is hosted by the lovely Claudia at My Soul Called Life. I got the pleasure of getting to know her better for the past two months and I really enjoyed exchanging e-mails with her. So first off, let’s start with the most important question for this whole post, shall we?

What is Lovely Letters Snail Mail?

Lovely Letters is a Snail Mail Exchange Program focused on building new relationships by sending Lovely Letters and packages all across the globe, one new friend at a time. We are bloggers who love connecting through the love of sending and receiving snail mail. This project promotes encouragement, collaboration, friendship, and growth as individuals and as a blogging community. For more information on how you can participate, click here!

Naturally, when I discovered this I had to sign up immediately. Which was such a great decision. I really had a great time and I will definitely sign up for this pen pal pairing again in the future, but sadly not right away because I will be away over the summer and won't have any time to send any parcels anywhere. But who knows, maybe in August I'll be able to join again!

CLAUDIA'S SUPREME PARCEL SURPRISE

I really enjoyed getting to know Claudia better. She's an awesome person and I've been following her blog since I started this blog and joined the 2016 Dystopia Reading Challenge which she is co-hosting. So it was fun to get to know the person behind all those interesting reviews and other posts on her blog. Her parcel totally hit me off guard, though. She totally nailed it and I love every single thing she send me. Let me show you what goodies she sent me.

When I got home only seven days after she told me she mailed the parcel and found this huge package in my mailbox I was totally flabbergasted.

 

Let's just say that I'm a genious that I thought about unpacking this outside on our garden table because there were little glitter hearts everywhere! Seriously, I still find them on the floor in my room although I thought I left them all outside. But don't mistake this for a complaint, because it was totally cute and who doesn't love glitter hearts? Now just imagine me with a huge grin on my face unpacking this. I really took my time because I was so happy about this georgous content.

I was actually really shocked by how much I loved this. Claudia managed to send me goodies that were totally my taste. I do not know how she figured I'd like this so much, but can I just say Claudia: You hit the bull's eye! One of my absolute favourite goodies in this parcel is the donut keychain! I love it!

   

MY FIRST PARCEL SENT TO THE US

I had a few problems with my parcel before I could mail it. Somehow I bought the wrong format for shipping to foreign countries and it got totally messy until I found an official package I could use. But yeah, everything worked out in the end so I'm really glad about that.

This was my first parcel and I felt a little nervous about it because I didn't know if Claudia would like the things I got for her. But in the end I decided to include the following goodies for her:
❥ Lovely Stickers in pastel colours
❥ A cute little notebook with an owl motif (because I adore owls)
❥ A wooden butterfly for her to choose her new favourite spot in the house
❥ Joss sticks with the scent of strawberries and sandalwood
❥ A Minnie Mouse Notepad
❥ A Magnetic Notepad for the fridge
❥ And next to some personal notes I included my favourite songtext by my favourite Swiss singer called Bastian Baker in the hopes that she might come to like a Swiss artist

If you haven't guessed yet, the theme was {Invigorating & New} & the color theme was {Pastels}. I really liked following this themes and now I think I'd do an even better job next time. And I know that there'll definitelly be a next time!
